As the month of April begins, you may notice some extra color blowing in the breeze through Downtown Ellsworth!

We are thrilled to announce that student-created Earth Day flags are officially flying across the city through May 1st. This project was a true community collaboration, as students from both Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School and Ellsworth High School spent weeks brainstorming, designing, and painting these one-of-a-kind flags!

Throughout Main Street, our students’ community pride, artistic talent, and connection to the world around them are on full display for everyone to see!

The initiative was made possible through a partnership with the City of Ellsworth Parks & Recreation Department and director Roddy Ehrlenbach. By providing the materials and the logistics for hanging the flags, the city gave our students a public platform to share their environmental messages. Shoutout to Grace Otwirk and Tabatha White for stopping by after school to help our EEMS students decorate, too!

Our EEMS art teachers put out a ‘call for art,’ and those students certainly answered the bell! Over at the high school, the project was offered as a choice in most classes, while the Painting class took the flags on as a core part of their curriculum. It was a fantastic way for students to meet their learning targets for public exhibition and community connection, and most of the students were totally pumped to see their work move out of the classroom and onto Main Street!
We invite all families, neighbors, and visitors to head downtown, grab a coffee, and take a "gallery walk" along the sidewalks to see these masterpieces in person while they are on display this month. The flags will remain up through May 1st, at which point they will be replaced with the traditional American flags. Thank you to the City of Ellsworth and the Ground Maintenance team for helping our students’ vision take flight and for celebrating the creativity of our school community.
