In light of recent nationwide tragedies involving students struck around school buses, the Ellsworth School Department is reiterating its call for community cooperation in ensuring student safety during school transportation operations.
Maine law (Title 29-A, §2308) clearly requires that motorists stop when approaching a school bus that has stopped with flashing red lights to receive or discharge passengers. Drivers may not proceed until the bus resumes motion or the bus driver signals that it is safe to do so. This requirement applies to vehicles approaching from either direction, unless the traffic is on a separate divided roadway.
“Our transportation professionals are committed to the safety of every student,” says Superintendent Amy Boles. “But safety is a shared responsibility. Following Maine’s school bus laws not only protects our children — it supports the hard work of our drivers who care for families across our community.”
The Ellsworth School Department encourages all drivers to:
Remain stopped for school buses displaying red flashing lights and stop arms.
Exercise heightened caution during peak bus times and in neighborhood streets.
Educate family members and neighbors about Maine’s bus safety laws.
Motorists are reminded that violators of these statutes may face traffic infractions and other consequences under state law. The school department continues to collaborate with local law enforcement to promote compliance and protect students.
