THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

In an effort to meet high school graduation requirements, English course curriculum will focus on Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. In addition to academically driven work, students are also encouraged to collaborate in small groups in an effort to promote interpersonal skills, which will help prepare them for post-secondary experience.

READING

  • Evidence of close reading

  • Evidence of reading comprehension and interpretation through a variety of texts

  • Conducting research

  • Reading non-fiction texts in support of projects and essays

WRITING

  • Writing reflective pieces

  • Writing argumentative essays

  • Writing literary analysis essays

  • Composing narrative essays

  • Engaging in the writing process

SPEAKING AND LISTENING

  • Participating effectively in a range of discussion topics

  • Presenting in front of peers and/or public

  • Developing note-taking skills

  • Developing questions for future discussions
